Eyeglass Frames
Our eyeglass dispensary
contains the most progressive
types of frames available from over 30 different manufacturers. The
distinctive frames we feature are produced in various countries:
Germany, Japan, Italy and France.
University
Vision Clinic also carries a fine assortment
of traditional frames, sports eyewear and sunglasses. The prices of the
exclusive eyewear as well as most advanced types of imported frames
available have always been very reasonable.
Eyeglass Lenses
The staff of University Vision
Clinic will help you
choose the lens that is right for your needs. We carry all types of
lenses. A few examples are:
High
Index Lenses: These
lenses are made of materials which are compressed, so the same amount
of visual correction can be made using less material than regular
plastic or glass lenses.
“High index” means that the lenses have a higher index
of refraction which refers to the speed of light travel as it passes
through the material. Which in turn produces a thinner lens.
The higher the index of refraction, the denser the
material: a 1.66 index of refraction will result in a thinner and
lighter weight lens than a 1.54 index of refraction material. Generally
the higher the index of refraction, the softer the material is.
Trivex/Polycarbonate:
Trivex/Polycarbonate lenses are thinner and lighter weight than
traditional
plastic lenses. They also offer ultraviolet protection and scratch
resistance, in addition they are 12 times more impact resistant than
plastic lenses. This makes them the lenses of choice for children,
sports and safety. eyewear.
Trivex/Polycarbonate lenses are constructed out of a
material
that is identical to what is called “bulletproof glass”; it has also
been used for space shuttle windshields.
Trivex/Polycarbonate lenses are safer than traditional materials
because they
are not brittle, so they will not usually break if they come into
contact with fast moving objects such as balls or racquets.
Progressive
Lenses:
If you are over 40 years old, and have trouble reading fine print, you
have more options than just the lined bifocals. Progressive lenses,
also known as “no-line bifocals” are the closest to natural vision.
Progressives provide a smooth transition from distance to intermediate
to near distances.
The opticians at University Vision Clinic are well
experienced in dispensing progressive lenses and only use the finest
manufacturers from Germany, Japan and Israel.
Until recently a disadvantage of the progressive lens
was that the
eyeglasses frame had to be rather large in order to accommodate all the
areas of focus in the lens. Currently, lens manufacturers have overcome
that difficulty by making progressive lenses that are more compact to
fit into smaller frames.
Progressive lenses also come in many different
materials, glass, plastic, high-index, as well as
photochromic lenses.
Most manufacturers are aware that not everyone will be
comfortable wearing progressives, so they offer a trial period of a few
weeks. After that time if you can not adapt to them we will exchange
them for a lined bifocal or single vision reading glasses.
Computer
~ Occupational Lenses:
Dr. Hovander has experience in prescribing lenses and exclusively for
computer use, or for specific tasks which your occupation or hobby
require.
There are lenses available which will reduce fatigue and
stress while not having to look near the bottom of eyeglass lenses as
experienced in most bifocals.
There are new progressive lenses specifically designed
with computer/ occupational tasks in mind, our staff has many years
experience dispensing these specialty lenses.
LENS COATINGS:
Scratch
Resistant Coatings -
No lens material (even glass) is scratch proof. but a lens that is
treated with a clear hard coating does become more resistant to
scratching. The staff at the University Vision Clinic can provide you
with the lens solutions, cleaning cloths and instructions to help your
lenses keep looking great.
Ultra
Violet Treatment - A
lens with ultra-violet treatment helps protect your eyes from harmful
U.V. radiation (a leading cause of cataracts). This is a simple and
quickly applied to most plastic lenses, and it does not change the
appearance of the lenses.
Anti
Reflective Lenses
Anti-reflective (A/R)lenses are similar to the coatings found on
microscopes and camera lenses. With an A/R lens you
will notice a reduction in glare, reflections and halos around lights,
this is a great safety benefit when you’re driving at night. Also, the
A/R lenses enhance the amount of light thus increasing visual acuity as
well as creating
a nicer cosmetic appearance.
